Thandavam was waiting time for Mohanlal fans. The fans who were waiting for their hero to turn up on screen with new thunderous numbers and power packed dialogues are really disappointed.
Whenever Mohanlal has teamed up with Shaji Kailas, the films have turned out to be super hits. While the team's first film Aaram Thampuram was a super-hit, their second one Narasimham proved to be one of the top-grossers in the history of Malayalam cinema. And Thandavam, which was the team's third film, have not done any wonders.?
The fans who thronged the theatres with great expectations were really disappointed. The person who perhaps pinned hopes on Thandavam was producer Johny Sagarika for Dickle Cinema, whose earlier production-venture, the Mohanlal-starrer Chakram, was aborted mid-way, incurring heavy financial loss.?
Thandavam tells the story of two brothers Swaminathan (Nedumudi Venu) and Kasinathan (Mohanlal) have great respect and love for each other. Swaminathan is a true Gandhian and is a farmer while Kasinathan runs an Ayurvedic resort and resides in the town. Kalimuthu Gounder (Manoj K Jayan) is the villain in the village who hates Swaminathan, as the villagers support him. Gounder sees Swaminathan as a potential threat to his political ambitions as he runs the administration of the village very efficiently.
Swaminathan discovers an herbal fuel, which was very much opposed by Gounder. There is a city-bred politician Shanker Das (Sai Kumar) a former minister who hates Kasinathan. So the two villains team up and steal Swaminathan's fuel discovery and murder him. So, braying for their blood, Kasinathan comes back to the village to take revenge. He gets the help of the local DYSP whose daughter Meenakshi (Kiran) is in love with him.
There is too much of vulgar dialogues and sexy numbers by Mumtaz and Anusree. More sickening is that Shaji Kailas has taken some scenes of his earlier hits like the recent Shivam.The songs in the film are not worth listening. M G Sreekumar has turned music director with this film and all the songs are lifted from Tamil hits. Jagathy Sreekumar has got only very little to do in this film. Also in the cast are Jagadeesh, Sadique, Manianpillai Raju, Vijayakumar, Salim Kumar, Mumtaz, Bhavani and others. The location and the dance settings are okay.
