It’s an Olympian feat to make a multistarrer film especially with Mammootty and Mohanlal that will appeal to the masses and at the same time make their fans happy.

However director Joshy, writers Sibi.K.Thomas and Udayakrishnan, and above all producer Dileep has delivered a stylish, racy and never a dull moment super entertainer with their Twenty:20. It is a winner all the way, a Kidilan and Adipoli masala entertainer with all the ingredients mixed in the right proposition.

The film has a great star cast with two superstars and five other important stars along with 55 other popular faces in Malayalam films. But the good news is that Mammootty and Mohanlal have got equal footage, importance and both are simply outstanding in their respective roles.

They carry the film to its winning post on the strength of their characterization, style and knockout performances. Suresh Gopi steals the show in his own way, while producer Dileep who has the shortest role in the film brings out his impeccable comic timing.

What has made the film work big time is the packaging, presentation and the script flow, the right gags, humour and the sudden twists that make it an edge of the seat thriller with a stunning climax. Everything falls into the groove and is a perfect fit, and there is some newness in the way the story unfolds.

Though the film is nearly 3 hours, it does not drag as there is a twist in every scene and the suspense builds up to a fitting climax. The director and the script writers has worked overtime to make each star’s role and characterization sync with his screen image and mixed it correctly with the commercial masala ingredients and slickly packaged along with light hearted dialogues that will work with the audiences.

The story thread is simple. Retired Justice Viswanathan Menon (Madhu) and his wife (Kaviyoor Ponamma) comes home to his palatial bungalow to celebrate Vishu with his children ( Siddique and Vijayraghavan) and grandchildren. The caretaker of the bungalow is a crazy guy (Innocent) which leads to a lot of fun with some petty thieves(Cochin Haneefa, Harisri Asokhan, Kochu Preman,Kalpana) breaking in and creating havoc.

Meanwhile Menon’s grandson Arun (Indrajit) a Medical student in Bangalore is accused of murdering a fellow student. The tough and rough Police Commissioner Antony Punnakadan (Suresh Gopi), who has his own axe to grind against Menon’s children, takes Arun into custody.

The Menon family appoint ace criminal lawyer Ramesan Nambiar (Mammootty), who bails him out. A doctor and professor of Medicine Vinod Bhaskar (Jayaram) wanted to testify against Arun but is kidnapped by Karinkal Pappachan (Kalabhavan Mani) a thug. Soon Arun is murdered and Punnakadan arrests Devan (Mohanlal), a poor trader who happened to be there on the spot.

Devan’s sister (Kavya Madhavan) and his mother (Sukumari) tells Ramesan that Devan is being framed up by Punnakadan and he should take up the case. Ramesan urged by his wife (Gopika) proves Devan’s innocence in the court and he is let free. Later Ramesan comes to know that the whole thing was a stage managed drama by Devan and his gang and he is really Devaraja Pratap Varma a don who wants vigilante justice, so that he can avenge the brutal murder of his brother Karthi (Dileep) by Arun and his cousins (Shammi Thilakan and Manoj.K Jayan). All this leads to a flashback which is startling and explosive, with a cool twist in the climax.

The film weaves a spell on the viewer with some electrifying scenes, which gets the maximum claps in the theatre. The Mammootty introduction scene as he breaks all speed records to reach the court, with the cops hot on his heels, is simply terrific as he gets down from the car and as Suresh Gopi is about to arrest him, he says- “I didn’t drive the car, it is a left hand drive, so arrest my driver!”

Another Paisa Vasool scene is just before interval, when Mammootty saves Mohanlal in the court where he is accused of murder, and as he walks out the transformation from the meek Devan to the mighty Devaraja Pratap Varma takes place, as he takes his Mundu (dhoti) and folds it up (Narasimamham style), twirls his moustache, puts on his Rayban glasses and delivers punchlines to his friends (Jagathy and co) and has an eyeball to eyeball confrontation with Mammootty, with Tirupachi background music, as the screen explodes – INTERVAL!

Suresh Gopi’s shootout scene in the climax (can’t reveal much as it will be a spoiler) and his punchline dialogue and body movement are riveting. Dileep- Bhavana, ‘slap’ introduction scene is a scream! Most of the comedians like Innocent, Jagathi, Sooraj Venjaranmoodu, Jagadish, Salim Kumar and others have just walk-in roles, but they are able to bring the house down with their own comic track. Most of the other actors have miniscule roles, but never before has so many artists worked in a single film. Pritviraj, Jayasurya appear only in a disco song with Nayanthara who looks glamorous.

There are only three songs by Suresh Peters which are peppy including the title track. The pick of the lot is the Mauritius song O’ Priye.., lensed beautifully, by cameraman P. Sukumar, with eye catching DI work. Count among the other plus points is Ranjan Abraham’s crisp editing as scenes meld into one another. Stun Shiva’s awesome action scenes, with Mammootty- Mohanlal fight scene in the flat stands out.

Move over Fazil, Joshy and his script writers have done a better job here than what you saw in Harikrishnans, when the two superstars came together! In sum, T:20, is an escapist story with sufficient thrills. It is a blockbuster in the making and is refreshingly fresh, innovative entertaining and highly recommended. Go for it!
