Aaram Thampuran: Mohanlal, Shaji Kailas Film


Aaram Thampuran (1997) is one of the most successful Malayalam films and has a cult following. It was directed by Shaji Kailas and starred Mohanlal. This is probably the first in a series of films in which Mohanlal played larger-than-life roles, the others being Narasimham, Ravanaprabhu, and Thandavam.

The film's songs were composed by Malayalam music director Raveendran. The song "Hari Muraliravam" was sung by Yesudas.

Jagannadhan (Mohanlal) alias Jagan makes a friend of him (Saikumar) to buy an old kovilakam for him as a return of favour. Jagan starts to live in the tharavadu and slowly gets involved in the life of people around him. People see him as the 6th Thamburan in the regime, which everybody thinks lost its roots. He clashes with the Kolappulli Appan Thamburam (Narendra Prasad) the local land lord who wants the destruction of the old house and thus causing and end to the family itself. He prevents a religious possession. During the course of the story Jagan is shown as an fan of classical Indian music and art and said to be running an art gallery in Delhi from there he travels to Gwalior to learn Hindustani music and then he turns into a gangster afterwards, of which reason is not shown in the story. It is revealed later that Jagan actually is the son of the priest who was killed in the feud between the two families and Jagan's purpose is revenge for his father's death of which Kolapulli apphan is the main mastermind. Jagan outwits and outcomes the Appan Thamburan and his allies and conducts the possession. Though he tends to leave the place with his love Unnimaya (Manju Warrier) after that, he obliges to the people's wish and stays back.
