Mohanlal in this character plays Balagopalan a middle class salaried person who wants to build himself and also needs to takes care of other family members. He has a sister who marriage responsibility is with him. Also KPAC Lalitha who plays his elder sister is utilizing him and makes him spend money for her children. Then he finds Shobana with whom he falls in love and tries to help her by giving cash to her family as they are financially backward due to some legal land problems. In the meantime he sells his own land which was his dream to build house for supporting shobana's family.
Later on he loses his job due to a labour strike and he has nothing to do then. Manian Pillai Raju who s best friend marries his sister and he and his grandmother become alone. Sreenivasan plays a lawyer in this film and wins the legal case for Shobana's family.Sobhanas family become rich after the case is won. But then Mohanlal is acoided by Shobhanas father Balan K. Nair and plans to marry Shobhana and Sreenivasan. Shobana who loves Mohanlal then gets along with him moves to his village forever, this film describes the difficulties faced by a middle class salaried person who tries to get a living. The film portrays the story with little humour.
